Origin of a Sports Card Investor

Many stories about collecting cards begin with a father and I’m no exception. The baseball card in the above photo is from the 1954 Red Heart Dog Food set. My dad owned the complete set when he was 11, and Stan Musial was his favorite player. Of course the set was eventually thrown away, but my love of baseball and baseball cards is forever connected to my father.

My dad’s grandfather used to cheer on John McGraw’s New York Giants at the Polo Grounds during the early 20th century. On my mother’s side, my grandfather was a left-handed pitcher in the Cape Cod league (the minors), and later in life was good friends with Johnny Antonelli (the New York Giants’ 1954 pitching ace). I’ve had the good fortune to wear World Series rings of both the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants (I have a friend who works for them).

I began collecting in 1980, the Rickey Henderson Rookie card set, and was a diehard collector/trader/minor dealer until I went college in 1991. Toward the end of 2020 I started an eBay account and on a whim began to buy a few cards from the 1980 set (Joe Morgan, Carl Yazstremski, and Tony Perez). A little over a year later and I’m completely back in the game.

I watch videos (Sports Cards Live, Flipping Steve, Card Collector 2, Breakout Cards, Sports Card Investor) among others, and regularly study the market by going to card shows, following eBay sales, and contributing to conversations in the LinkedIn group, “Sports Trading Cards Enthusiasts of America.”

For me, Sports Card Investing is the right blend of nostalgia, history, and athlete appreciation, all wrapped up as a way to save some extra money to support my son’s special learning needs.
